| In a Spinal Unit the Social worker's role is to support and advise people with a spinal cord injury and their family on future care needs |

The Social Worker will be available to people with a spinal cord injury and their family and will assist in:
- Counselling throughout the stay in hospital.
- Liaising with the occupational therapist, physiotherapist, nurses and doctors to monitor rehabilitation progress, by monthly goal planning meetings which include the spinal cord injured patient and his/her family.
- Maximising income for the patient, pursuing funding from the spinal cord injured, local social services.
- Supporting applications for suitable housing and if necessary, contacting the local Housing Department.
- Undertaking Community Care Assessments.
- Ensuring a safe discharge home for the patient by liaising with the patients local social services, care agencies and district nurse.
- Arranging training, in conjunction with the Unit Discharge Coordinator, for carers who will look after people with spinal cord injuries when they are home in their own community.
Four weeks after a person with spinal cord injury has been discharged from hospital, providing all is going well and
the person with spinal cord injury has all benefits in place, the Social Worker will close the hospital case file.
